Safari Packing List
Clothes:
We suggest ‘layering up’ for game drives as it is much cooler in the early mornings and you can remove the layers as the day heats up. The temperature also drops slightly in the evenings so it’s a good idea to bring a warm fleece and covered shoes for night-time.
Footwear:
Either comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are appropriate for all safari activities.
Other Essentials:
For protection against the sun, a brimmed hat, sun tan lotion and sunglasses are also suggested. A pair of binoculars for use on game drives is highly recommended. Be sure to bring a camera, possibly with a zoom lens and enough memory card space as the photo opportunities will be endless.
Extras:
Other items to consider include: lip balm (it can get quite dry in the East Africa Savanna), insect repellant and a good book to read!
Water Bottles:
Our guests receive a complimentary branded water bottle on arrival which can be supplied or in some lodges, camps and hotels are refilled from Reverse Osmosis filtration units around our camps. Our guests will have an unlimited supply of purified water – even on game drives. Providing guests with a re-useable bottle is part of our conservation ethos, in an attempt to eliminate single use plastics.
Other Notes:
Please note that there is a strict 15kg limit in soft bags for most internal safari-bound flights within Kenya.
RWANDA SAFARI PACKING LIST:
For all clients traveling to Rwanda, in addition to the above you should make sure you have good durable walking boots, a light waterproof jacket and some sweaters or fleeces. Rwanda Gorilla Trekking
Clothes:
For example Nyungwe is the best and largest afro Montane rain forest in central Africa. It sits on the altitude of 1600m to 2950m above sea level; quite a high altitude and can get cold at times. A long sleeve shirt with a vest or t-shirt underneath is plenty. In the mornings it might be a little chilly so take a fleece with you. A waterproof jacket is very important, again if not for the rain, then for the stinging nettles.
Long trousers, safari pants or even just good old jeans! There are stinging nettles up in the forest and waterproof pants are brilliant, not only for the rain, but more so for the nettles. The nettles will penetrate through any type of material except waterproof materials such as Gortex.
Footwear & Socks:
Bring comfortable shoes for the hike, preferably sturdy waterproof hiking boots. Make sure you have spent a little time in your choice of footwear before your Gorilla trek.
Fairly long socks to tuck your trousers into as an extra precaution to stop the safari ants from getting in underneath your clothing.
Other Essentials:
Gaiters are very important for leg protection against stinging nettles especially. The longer ones that run between your boots and your knees are best – the shorter ones serve no purpose.
Bring supplies of any personal prescription medication you require plus anti-malaria pills. It is also recommended that you bring mosquito repellent.
Extras:
As an extra precaution against nettles, should you encounter any, we suggest that you to take a pair of gloves with you for the trek such as garden gloves with a protective layer of rubber or leather.
Packing Tips:
We understand the importance of traveling light as guests often do a safari elsewhere during the same holiday and therefore your luggage has a weight restriction of around 15kgs on the smaller planes. With this in mind, we do provide light rain jackets, small back-packs, gaiters, gloves, walking sticks and boots for those who would like to borrow ours.
If you plan to bring a digital camera, video camcorder or other rechargeable electronics, it is suggested that you confirm that your A/C adapter or battery charger works with 220 volts, and also bring a 3-pin square (UK) electrical adapter plug.
