6 Days Migration Trail Flying Safari Experience

At a glance

While the Serengeti boasts incredible numbers of resident wildlife, it is perhaps best known as the site of the annual Great Migration, when an estimated three million antelope – mostly wildebeest — migrate to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. One of the greatest spectacles in the natural world, the migration follows the seasonal rains, spending the wet season on the south eastern plains of Tanzania and the dry season in the woodlands of north western Kenya. Between January and March the wildebeest give birth on the short grass plains of the south eastern Serengeti. This time of year attracts a vast plethora of predators, from lion to hyena, leopard and cheetah. As the grazing runs low in this area the wildebeest move to the central Serengeti and then the Western Corridor before crossing the Grumeti and Mara Rivers on their journey south in Kenya. Braving the jaws of some of Africa’s largest crocodiles, the river crossings are always a dramatic and emotional sight.

Detailed trip itinerary

Day 1: Arusha - Western Serengeti, Kirawira Serena Camp (Fullboard)

08:00 Depart on a scheduled flight from Arusha Airport to Western Serengeti to arrive Grumeti Airstrip at 10:00. Your dedicated Safari Driver Guide will be at hand to welcome you and drive to Kirawira Serena Safari Camp. Enjoy game viewing drive en-route to the Camp for check-in Kirawira Serena Camp

Close to the Grumeti River, famed for its giant crocodiles, perched on a hill with uninterrupted views of the plains of the Western Serengeti, the Camp offers its guests a luxurious tented African experience! It is a reincarnation of a Victorian tented camp and guests enjoy a valet service, superb house cuisine, fine wines and the best of East African hospitality. Throughout the camp, native wood, African art and tented canvas are combined with typical Victorian and colonial furniture to recall a bygone era of explorers, pioneers and the early colonial settlers. The accommodation is housed in deluxe individual tents set on wooden platforms with a private veranda from which there are spectacular views over the endless Serengeti.

Lunch in the Camp with the afternoon at leisure. 16:00 enjoy a game viewing drive in the Western Serengeti before returning to the Camp for dinner and overnight at Kirawira Serena Camp.

Day 2: Western Serengeti (Grumeti Area), Kirawira Serena Safari Camp (Fullboard)

Full day in the Grumeti in Western Corridor, on the migration route. Here the migrants mix with many resident herbivores, including topi, giraffe and buffalo and a resident population of wildebeest. It is the giant Nile crocodiles in the Grumeti river that has made this area famous. Growing up to 6 metres in length, they are inextricably linked with the great migration!

The Serengeti would not be the same without the beautiful rock outcrops known as kopjes. Also known as inselbergs, the intriguing rounded shapes of these ancient granite rocks are the result of cracking and erosion from exposure to sun, wind and rain. They provide shelter and capture water for a wealth of wildlife and plants. The main groups of kopjes are: Barafu, Gol, Maasai, Loliondo, Simba and Moru. Moru Kopjes are outstanding for their size and profusion of resident wildlife. There are early Maasai paintings still visible at Moru, and a special rock used for making music. Gol and Barafu kopjes provide important habitat for cheetah and are used by wildebeest in the wet season. Maasai and Loliondo kopjes provide outlooks for resident lion and large cobras. Simba kopjes support a great variety of animals and birds including giraffe, baboon and lion for which they are named. All meals and overnight at Kirawira Serena Safari Camp.

Day 3: Central Serengeti, Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (Fullboard)

After a leisurely breakfast in the camp, check out and drive to central Serengeti region with game viewing en-route to arrive at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in the early afternoon for check-in and lunch in Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge.

An award-winning gem of a lodge in one of the most beautiful settings in Tanzania. Seamlessly blended high into an acacia-lined ridge, our African style lodge and infinity pool offer panoramic views across the Serengeti’s vast, endless grasslands, where lions and cheetahs stalk their prey and massive migrating wildebeest herds darken the landscape in a relentless search for fresh grazing grounds.

After lunch you can opt to relax by the pool and enjoy the magnificent views of the Serengeti plains before embarking on a game viewing drive at 16:00. Return to the lodge in the early evening in time to refresh for dinner. All meals and overnight at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge.

Day 4 & 5: Central Serengeti, Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (Fullboard)

Two full days in Central Serengeti with morning and afternoon game viewing drive in the Park. Apart from the Selous, this is the largest of all the Parks in Tanzania, summed up as 'one of the most unique areas in the world'. The Serengeti contains the largest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa, on a scale which has no parallel anywhere in the world. Sun-downers on the plains, one of the evenings, you will be hosted to a Sundowner Cocktail on the plains of the Serengeti!

This activity is an essential part of safari life and dates back to the time of the great safaris of the 1920’s when elegant cocktails were always served while watching the spectacle of the African sunset. Timed to begin as the sun begins its descent, the Serengeti Sundowner begins with a gentle evening game drive, arriving at the sundowner site just as the evening sky turns gold-pink. Usually, a campfire will be lit, a full bar set up alongside a ring of safari chairs, and cocktail snacks served while a guitarist sings softly in the background. As night falls, you will be driven back to the lodge in time for dinner. This is an experience not to be missed!! All meals and overnight at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

Day 6: Fly Arusha

Breakfast in the lodge and transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your morning scheduled flight to Arusha Airport. You will be met by our representative on arrival and driven to Arusha Serena Hotel Resort & Spa for a farewell lunch compliment of Serena Hotels.
