At a glance

"Theatre of the Wild"
The sight of dust-red elephants wallowing, rolling, and spraying each other with the midnight-blue waters of the palm-shaded Galana River is one of the most evocative images in Africa. This, along with the 300- kilometer-long Yatta Plateau—the longest lava flow in the world—makes for an adventure unlike any other in Tsavo East National Park. The park forms the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to most of the larger mammals: vast herds of dust-red elephants, rhinos, buffalo, lions, leopards, pods of hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, lesser kudu, gerenuks, and prolific birdlife featuring 500 recorded species.

Detailed Kenya Safari Itinerary

Day 1. Tsavo East National Park, Ashnil Aruba Lodge, Mealplan: FB

You will be picked up from your hotel at 06:00 and be driven to Tsavo East National Park, where you will arrive at 09:00 time for a morning game drive until lunch at Ashnil Aruba Lodge at 13:00. Ashnil Aruba overlooks the Aruba Dam in the heart of Tsavo East, one of Kenya's greatest and most popular national parks. Surrounded by vast arid plains, the dam's waters attract large numbers of game, especially elephants, making for excellent viewing from the lodge. Ashnil Aruba's location ensures you will get the experience you came for great sightings of many animals, especially elephants. Summers can be hot here, but the rains bring colour and life to the otherwise barren plains, making the best time to visit between December and March (if you can cope with the heat).

In the afternoon, from 15:30, you will depart for an afternoon game drive in expansive Tsavo East National Park, returning around 18:30 to Ashnil Aruba Lodge for refreshments and later dinner at 19:30.

Wake up for tea or coffee and a snack at 06:00, then depart at 06:30 for a morning game drive until it is time for a full breakfast at 08:00 at the lodge. Thereafter, check out and proceed to Taita Hills Sanctuary, where you will arrive in time for a mid-morning game drive until lunch at Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa. After lunch, you will take a short rest at Salt Lick Safari Lodge, before starting an evening game drive at 15:30 in Taita Hills Sanctuary until at 18:30 time for refreshments at the lodge, followed by dinner and an overnight stay at Salt Lick Safari Lodge.

While at Salt Lick Safari Lodge, large numbers of wildlife come to drink water at the adjacent waterholes, providing a wonderful opportunity to view animals in close proximity in their natural habitat. The lobby and terraced bar offer excellent views and photographic opportunities, while an underground tunnel and bunker with ground-level windows provide unbelievably close yet safe access to a variety of animals as they drink.
