At a glance
Karen Blixen Camp is located in Mara North Conservancy (MNC), a beautiful private wilderness area
covering more than 25,000 hectares (~61,000 acres). It is a vital part of the Maasai Mara ecosystem,
forming the northwestern zone and bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
The aim is to establish
a best-practice, world-class conservancy with long-term commitments to the environment, wildlife, and
local communities. MNC strongly supports low bed density tourism and aspires to an ideal minimum
ratio of 142 hectares per bed (350 acres per bed) to guarantee an exclusive safari experience while
minimizing environmental impact.
Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Masai Mara National Reserve, Karen Blixen Camp (Fullboard)
Meet and greet at the hotel reception followed by transfer to the airport before 07:00. Fly from either
from Moi International Airport Mombasa, Diani Airport, or Malindi Airport before 07:30 to Masai Mara
National Reserve Mara North Conservancy Airstrip, arriving after about two hours. Upon arrival, be met
and picked up by a 4WD Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and both sides open and both sides open for a
transfer to Karen Blixen Camp, with a great possibility of seeing wildlife in their natural habitat within
the Masai Mara National Reserve. There will be refreshments followed by lunch at 13:00.
Afternoon game drive from 15:30 to 18:30 then dinner and overnight in the camp.

Situated in the community-owned Mara North Conservancy, this Danish-owned camp is set right beside the Mara River. When not out exploring the conservancy, you can sit out and watch the resident hippo pod belching in the water or grazing along the banks, view birds through your binoculars or watch zebra coming to drink.
The 22 canvas tents are raised from the ground and each have a spacious deck overlooking the river, a large en suite bathroom and an outdoor shower. While there are more tents here than at other camps, it still retains a peaceful atmosphere and feels private.
Your time is spent on game drives through the conservancy, but you can also opt to do a walking safari, take a dawn hot air balloon ride or visit a Maasai village. Around camp, you can visit the on-site cooking school, plant a tree and find out more about the environmental initiatives in place here by joining an ‘eco walk’.
Meals are served on individual tables in the dining area, in front of the river or out in the bush. In the evening, a campfire is lit and you can gather with fellow guests to discuss the sightings you’ve had that day.
The Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa’s most famous parks. The wildlife viewing is superb throughout the year. The grassy plains and regular rainfall supports a huge population of herbivores, in turn attracting many predators. All three big cats are relatively easy to see. The yearly wildebeest migration coming through the park is one of the world’s most amazing wildlife spectacles.
The Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is home to the annual wildebeest migration where 2.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles follow the rains in search of new grass. They make their way from the Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara National Reserve somewhere around July and August, and usually arrive in September. The crossing of the Mara River along the way is one of the highlights of this spectacular event. They slowly head back into Tanzania around October.

The Masai Mara National Reserve isn’t one of Kenya’s birding hotspots. However, with more than 500 bird species recorded, this isn’t a bad place to mark off a lot of Kenya’s savannah species from your bird list. The park is particularly rich in raptors with 57 species present. Bateleurs can often be seen soaring above the grassy plains and predator kills are a good place to find up to six species of vultures scavenging. Migratory birds are present from November to April.

Days 2: Masai Mara National Reserve, Karen Blixen Camp (Fullboard)
Early in the morning at 06:00, take tea or coffee and a snack, then depart for the morning game drive at
06:30 with a packed full breakfast to be consumed at a designated spot in the Masai Mara National
Reserve wilderness. Continue the game drive until time for lunch at the camp at 13:00.
Afternoon game drive from 15:30 to 18:30 then dinner and overnight in the camp.
Day 3: Fly to Kenya Coast
This would be your last day of this Kenya Safari. You would wake up for a full breakfast before being
transferred to Mara North Conservancy Airstrip in the Masai Mara National Reserve to catch a flight to
the Kenya coast at 11:00. Fly to either Malindi Airport, Diani Airport, or Moi International Airport
Mombasa, arriving at 13:00, where you will be transferred to the hotel reception.
