12 Days Kenya Grevy Zebra Safari
Tour Code: TAS 37
[ Ashnil Aruba, Kilaguni Serena, Amboseli Serena, Lake Naivasha Crescent Camp, Keekorok Lodge, Lake Nakuru Lodge, Ashnil Samburu Camp, Serena Sweetwaters Camp ]

At a glance

Found almost exclusively in northern Kenya, the Grevy’s zebra remains endangered. This unique species is known for its striking tall appearance, thin stripes, and elegant gait. In the late 1970s, over 15,000 Grevy’s zebras roamed in the wild.

Unique stripe patterns: just like humans have unique fingerprints, Grevy’s zebras have unique stripe patterns, which allow identification of individuals within a population. Over time, this provides vital information on the survival, reproduction, and movements of Grevy’s zebras. Specifically, this safari takes you to Samburu National Reserve, one of the lesser-known reserves that is nevertheless teeming with life. Situated alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, the reserve attracts abundant wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains.

It is home to rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and the beisa oryx (also referred to as the Samburu Special Five). For this reason, we found it fitting to name this safari the "Samburu Special Five Safari," since it visits the reserve that is home to these species as well as elephants and large predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. ‘Kamunyak,’ the miracle lioness who adopted a baby oryx, was a resident of the reserve. Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction in this unique protected area. Birdlife is abundant, with over 450 species recorded.

Days 3: Amboseli National Park, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (Fullboard)

This day, after breakfast at 08:00, you will depart for Amboseli National Park, but first, you will visit Mzima Springs. The word "Mzima" means "alive." Yet, the life of Kenya’s Mzima Springs is largely born of ash and dung. In the neighboring Chyulu Range stand porous peaks of volcanic ash, whose youngest cones formed about 500 years ago. Rising 7,000 feet (2,000 meters) above an arid plain, these hills trap up to three feet (one meter) of rain each year from moisture-laden winds. All that rain soaks into the sponge-like ash and percolates down until it hits impervious bedrock and begins its underground journey to Mzima Springs, some 25 miles (40 kilometers) away.

Later, you will be driven to Amboseli National Park, where you will arrive in time for lunch at the lodge. The whole afternoon, from 15:30, you will have an evening game drive until time for refreshments at the lodge at 18:30 then dinner at 19:30 followed by overnight.

During this afternoon game viewing drive, you could participate in the optional activity at Amboseli National Park, where you will meet a Masai family, mostly women who sell ornaments and curios. They will also demonstrate their deep affection for their homestead, called a Boma, which consists of round huts made of sticks, mud, and cow dung. Children will be joyfully singing with their mothers, expressing their natural hospitality to visitors. Despite the current mandatory school attendance, some Masai children may be reluctant to attend due to strong cultural beliefs. These include the importance of cattle as a measure of wealth and the tradition of marrying at a young age, often when they are just entering their teenage years. Please note this activity is purely optional and incurs an additional cost of US$30.00, organized by your driver-guide.
