LAKE MBURO GAME
RESERVE
The Lake Mburo
Game Reserve covers 541sq km (209sq miles) in south-western
Uganda , a landscape from north to south of open plains,
acacia grasslands and marshy forests. The Reserve is bounded
to the north by the main Kampala – Mbarara Road , to the
east largely by Lake Kachera , to the west by the Ruizi
River and the south by swampland and a chain of 11 lakes.
It
has attractive scenery with the hills interwoven with meandering
shallow valleys. Two small lakes surrounded by wide swamps
occur in it, areas of super-abundant birdlife. The northern
parts are largely semi-open grasslands, while the southern
areas include the lakes with largely swampy or forested
shores.
Oribi, Topi and Zebra inhabit the open plains
of the north, but a greater concentration of wildlife occurs
in the middle belt of acacia grassland. Here Impala, Oribi,
Klipspringer, Warthog. Eland, Roan Antelopes and occasional
Waterbuck are found. Many Buffalo occur in the southern
marshes, and a few Lion and Leopard are found throughout
the Reserve.
Lake Mburo 's proximity to urban centers
and easy access on the all weather tarmac Kampala – Mbarara
Road make the Reserve a likely candidate to become Uganda
's fourth National Park within the next few years.
