Introduction

Sandarusi House is situated about 20 km south of Mombasa, on Tiwi beach, high above the Indian Ocean on an old coral bed with great vistas and a cool sea breeze.

The house characteristics are coastal Arab with 6 large en suite airy rooms, each with an individual and unique charm/ identity. The large rooms, open verandahs, garden, pool among the Baobabs and Tiwi Beach are favorable to visitors of all ages. The pool and the exposed reefs and their rock pools, as well as the safe and secure cool environment of Sandarusi make it a haven for children.

Fresh sea fish, prawns, and other shellfish are brought to the door by the local fishers, as is a great selection of seasonal coastal fruit and vegetables by the farm traders. Sandarusi is the perfect place to totally unwind, with long beaches for walks, and clear warm water to swim in. It’s a home from home – why not make it yours?

About Us

Family home
Sandarusi is a family coastal home; Archdeacon Walter Low and his wife Nell bought the original house and land in the 1940s, it was just a simple coastal home where their children and grandchildren could spend holidays together. It was transformed from an old mud and wattle house to this beautiful Arab creation in 1997. The house has been loved and adored by three generations of the Low family.

The House Team
The house is run by a small team of four.

1. Mercy the ‘in-charge’ who looks after the house, laundry and the small details

2. Shadrach is in charge of the garden and pool

3. Lewa is the night watchman

4. Zablon in-house chef and once aware of specific desires and tastes, will take charge and provide you with wonderful meals

The Property

Location
Tiwi Beach, South Coast, Kenya, East Africa

Beach Activities
Tiwi beach is a haven in itself away from the hustle and bustle of more renowned beaches to the south and north. The main beach is approximately 2 km long, but once past the southern rocks lies another 2.5 km to the Tiwi River.

On low tides the fringing reef is exposed giving children, bird and ocean lovers the opportunity to scan the reef flats for a variety of marine life, snorkel in the rock pools and time to admire the feeding birdlife.

Those wanting to swim need not go further than the southern end of the reef or the Tiwi river mouth.

Diani Beach is just south of Tiwi River mouth, either a long walk or a short drive away. Its more expansive beaches, though busier, provide an array of activities including:

Scuba Diving with a number of operators including Dive the Crab, Southern Scuba and Diani Reef. They each provide introductory diving courses, open water, advanced, rescue and instructors courses. They are members of SSI and PADI. Most dives are held outside the fringing reef, with many sites from Tiwi-Waa in the North to Chale point/Msambweni in the south.

Golf – the most renowned golf course is the Leisure Golf Course, adjacent to Leisure Lodge. It comprises an 18 hole championship course beautifully laid out with pools, forests and troughs. It is open to all ages, and for non-golfers has a bar and restaurant, or the many pools at the lodge could be used at an extra cost. Golf clubs can also be hired from the club, and caddies are also available. Private lessons can also be arranged.

Kite surfing, kayaking and other water activities are also easy to come by at many of the large hotels on Diani beach.

Deep Sea Fishing
The Indian Ocean offers excellent sport fishing almost all year round, and some of the most challenging and exciting deep sea fishing is available just 45 minutes drive from Sandarusi House, in the Shimoni waters and Pemba channel. Here the chances of catching a stripped Marlin are high. Tag and Release policy is however encouraged for bill fish.

Wildlife
The Shimba Hills are approximately 30 kms west of Sandarusi and renowned for the Shimba Hills National Park and Mwalange Elephant Reserve. The Hills raise to approximately 2000 ft above sea level, giving it a moist but cooler climate, accompanied with coastal rainforests, rivers and ravines and rolling hills. It is known for its birdlife, elephants, buffalo, and the rare roan and sable antelope. Sunsets and sunrises are also spectacular. A visit to either the Park or the Elephant Reserve are a must!!!

Recent reports in the local and international media regarding the drought situation in the Horn of Africa have been of concern to travellers who are asking if this will affect their safaris.

There has been a prolonged drought in the neighbouring countries to the North of Kenya and in the North-Eastern part of the country. During the course of 2010, failed rains have made the situation more severe to the extent that H.E. Mwai Kibaki the Kenyan President declared the drought a National disaster. Efforts have been stepped up to provide relief supplies to those affected by the drought.

We wish to clarify that the drought ravaging parts of the country is localised to specific areas and there are several other regions that have received adequate rainfall and expect bountiful harvest. The key areas where tourism activity takes place have not been affected by the drought and there is fantastic game viewing in the Parks, Reserves and Conservancies.

There is a large proportion of Kenyans who depend on tourism, directly and or indirectly, as a means of livelihood. This includes communities living around Parks and Reserves and those who operate community owned conservancies as an alternative to pastoralism. Visitors intending to come to Kenya can therefore rest assured that not only will they be able to enjoy their holidays as planned; they will also help to generate income and benefits to the local communities.
